Poe Mania Hits Richmond VA!

January 19, 2009 marks the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allen Poe. The City of Richmond and the State of Virginia figure prominently in Poe's biography. Poe was raised by foster parents here in Richmond after his mother died. Though buildings in which he lived in Richmond no longer exist, the oldest of the Poe museums in the country is here in Richmond! The Poe Museum here in Richmond even has a lock of his hair! There will be many events taking place over the course of the year to commemorate Poe's birth. We have just purchased two volumes of Poe's poetry and two volumes of his prose for guests to enjoy in our Maury Place library--perhaps with a glass of VA red wine by the fireplace. We think Poe would approve!

Virginia Bed and Breakfast Conference

We have just returned from the Mid-Atlantic Innkeepers' Conference, which was held at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA. We have been members of the Bed and Breakfast Association of Virginia (BBAV) and the Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII) for three years--even before we came across Maury Place. We have always learned a great deal from the gatherings of both organizations, and it is always helpful to chat with other innkeepers to learn more about how to serve our guests more effectively. Over the next few months, we will be implementing several ideas for business travelers. For example, have you ever hunted around a guest room in a hotel or inn looking for a place to plug in your laptop or your cell phone charger? We have! (Even at The Homestead!). To eliminate that search, we have placed power strips in all of our guest rooms. No more hunting on the floor for those outlets! What a simple solution that we had not thought of before! We always take away little nuggets like that from BBAV and PAII conferences. We have a list of other "action items" that we hope to implement over the next few months. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for us as innkeepers based upon your own bed and breakfast experiences as guests, please let us know! By the way, our guest rooms are every bit as luxurious (if not more so!) as those at The Homestead!

Maury Place Welcomes The New Year!

Maury Place has been open four months, and we have met many wonderful guests! We look forward to a fantasic 2009, our first full year as innkeepers.

From January 11th to 14th we are attending the annual conference of the Virginia Bed and Breakfast Association. This is our third year attending this event as well as the Professional Innkeepers International annual conference, events we attended well before we opened our doors. We see these conferences as an opportunity to learn how to best serve our guests. We take advantage of a variety of training seminars, as well as the trade show featuring the latest products and amenities. We have also been able to meet some of the best innkeepers in our profession, and learn from their experience.
