Maury Place Innkeepers Travel to Guatemala!

Mac and I will be traveling to Guatemala next week to visit various mission organizations that we support there. We also will be lodging at bed and breakfasts in Guatemala City and Antigua. Mac has traveled to Guatemala three times, but this will be my first visit! It will be an exciting adventure, I am sure! We are told that the climate will be in the high 70's to mid-80's with little or no rain-- not bad for February! We will be visiting various indigenous organizations that assist those who are most in need by providing support for small businesses and education for children. We will also have a vacation day in the tourist city of Antigua-- I am told the shopping is great there! Perhaps we will bring back some special coffee for our Maury Place breakfasts!

While we are in Guatemala, our two Inn Dogs, Chico and Lucy, will be well cared for. They have reservations at the luxury accomodations at Holiday Barn in Richmond.

Maury Place is closed for the week we are traveling in Guatemala, but we do have an assistant innkeeper who will be checking voice mail and e-mail. If you want to make reservations, or have questions do not hesitate to call (804) 353-2717 or contact us by e-mail.

Richmond VA Attractions - Running Events

Many Richmond area attractions are walking distance or just a short drive from Maury Place. Some literally pass right by our front door! Ever year, Richmond hosts two premier running events-- the Richmond Marathon and the Monument Avenue 10k-- that do just that. Guests who rent the Pathfinder suite can sit on their private balcony, and all guests can sit on our spacious front porch, and view these races.

For runners, the Richmond Marathon is a spectacular event because it passes through so many beautiful parts of Richmond-- Monument Avenue, Cary Street, the James River, Downtown, and North Side. Large numbers of bystanders watch the race offering enthusiastic encouragement to the runners, causing this event to be named "America's Friendliest Marathon" by Runner's World Magazine. This year, the marathon is scheduled to be run on November 14, 2009. Mac ran this marathon himself five years ago. Jeff went shopping nearby and greeted him at the finish line!

The Monument Avenue 10k, voted the best road race in the Southeast, runs the complete lenght of the Monument Avenue Historic District. Runners are surrounded by magnificent architecture, tree-lined medians, historic statues, and enthusiastic supporters. The 10k is scheduled to be run on March 28, 2009.

The 10k starts near Harrison Street, approximately 1.6 miles from Maury Place. The Marathon starts at 7th & Broad, approximately 2.8 miles from our front door. Check back later this spring, when we ill post "Race Specials" for runners and their supporters!

Maury Place Preserves Richmond History

One interesting aspect of Maury Place is that it is protected by 13 pages of historic easements-- restrictions placed on the deed-- that limit any changes that can be made to the property. These easements protect Maury Place from any future owner renovating the property in such a way as to affect its historic value. What this means is that all major features-- architectural details, floorplan layout, and such-- future generations will see Maury Place as it was when it was built in 1916. These restrictions were put in place by the previous owners, respected members of Richmond's historic preservation community, and are overseen by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

The easements on our property are unusual because they are generally more detailed than most. Woodwork, mantels, doors, and many specific light fixtures are protected.
Our situation is very special not only because of the strength of its historic protections, but also because so many people are able to enjoy this history. The grand style and elegance of Maury Place is not just for our private enjoyment, but also for the enjoyment of every guest.

We have accomplished this historic preservation while incorporating all the modern amenities that you expect in a luxury Bed and Breakfast. We features all private baths, individual room climate controls, flat screen TV's, wireless internet, and many other wonderful amenities.

We love the fact that we can preserve this great home, and pass on the history of Maury Place and the great Matthew Fontaine Maury after whom our property is named. Come see this wonderful Historic B&B for yourself. We hope to see you soon!

Richmond Gets New Movie Theater!

We often tell people that Maury Place is just walking distance from great local Richmond attractions-- the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Virginia Historical Society, many great restaurants and shops, and mucb more. We now have one more local attraction to offer.

On February 27, 2009, Richmond's newest movie theater will open-- less than a half mile from Maury Place! Movieland at Boulevard Square will feature 17 screens with stadium seating, no commercials, digital 3-D projection, and custom designed luxury seating. According to their website, Movieland’s design highlights and showcases Boulevard Square’s history as a locomotive assembly facility. Movieland is operated by Bow Tie Cinema -- "bringing style and elegance back to the movie going experience."

One of the great things about staying at a Bed and Breakfast is that you are staying in a neighborhood, within walking distance to a wide variety of attractions. We are excited about this addition to our neighborhood!
