Stride Through Time Richmond History Walk

On this Saturday, May 30, the Sports Backers will host the first Anthem Stride Through Time, a 10k walk through downtown Richmond. The 6.2-mile circuit will begin and end on Brown's Island and will take participants through various time periods of Richmond's rich history. Along the way, re-enactors will help re-create Richmond history. A huge selection of museums will be along the route commemorating the Civil War, the Confederacy, the Holocaust, and Edgar Allan Poe. Historic attractions along the route include the State Capitol, St. John's Church, the Maggie Walker House, and the Hippodrome Theatre, where black entertainers such as Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole performed during the heyday of the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. More than 1000 walkers have already signed up to participate! Richmond is teeming with history that serves as a microcosm for America's own past. Richmond history ranges from before the Revolutionary War, to the Civil War, to the roots of the civil rights movement, to slavery reconciliation. The cost of the walk is $25 for adults, $15 for age 14 or younger through May 28. Walk-up registrationn is $30 for adults, $20 for age 14 or younger. A portion of the proceeds will go to The History Fund, which benefits the Valentine Richmond History Center and the Historic Richmond Foundation. Woofstock on Monument Avenue!

Both of our Maury Place "Inn Dogs" are strays we adopted from rescue organizations. Lucy, our beagle mix, came from the Richmond Animal League ("RAL"), and Chico, our terrier mix, came from the SPCA in Rockbridge County. They have both been loving, wonderful additions to our family. On Saturday, May 30, 2009, RAL will be hosting "Woofstock," a dog festival on historic Monument Avenue between Lombardy and Allen! There is a $5 suggested donation, and all funds raised will go to support RAL's mission to save and provide homes for animals in need. There will be animals available for adoption, dog agility and games, contests, vendors, a kids area, food and drink, and live music! The "Strut your Mutt" walk will be at 9:30 a.m., and the festival takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visit www.ral.org or call 804-379-0046 for more info.

Translation from Portuguese to English

We had a very successful day yesterday, Mother's Day, May 10. We were one of the homes on the Museum District's annual house tour, and 650 people visited Maury Place! It was a gorgeous day here--perfect for strolling in the neighborhood. Thank you to all of the volunteers and visitors who made yesterday's event so special. In anticipation of the tour, we have been researching the translation of a small plaque that is on an exterior wall in our garden. We have some vague notion of what it means, but if anyone out there speaks Portuguese, we would be grateful for your assistance in providing a definitive translation. Here is what it says:
"Futuro e esperanca
O presente realidade
O passado uma lembranca
Mutas vezes e saudade."
Anyone know what it means? We would be most grateful for your assistance!
