Innkeepers Want Breakfast Too!

This morning, Mac and I treated ourselves to a full breakfast in our own Maury Place dining room! We used some of my favorite dishes--the brown, nautical themed "Fair Winds" pattern--and we ate just as if we were our own Maury Place guests. I made cinnamon swirl french toast (a guest favorite!) with berries and maple syrup and hickory smoked bacon. It was a nice reward for Mac and I to take the time to have a leisurely breakfast for sure, but it was also good for us as innkeepers to "see the view" from our own dining room table! I must say, our waistlines would increase dramatically if we had french toast for breakfast every morning, but it always helpful for us to see Maury Place through the eyes of a guest. Such experiences help us refine our service to provide our guests with the best experience possible.

Wedding Guests at Maury Place

We were very excited last week to host the family of Michelle, the beautiful bride pictured on our staircase here with her maid of honor and her Mom, Laurie. The house was buzzing with excitement all weekend as the parents of the bride, her aunt and uncle, and her cousin prepared for the big event. It was thrilling to see everyone appear looking gorgeous and depart for the wedding in a huge white limo waiting for them outside our front door! Congratulations to Michelle and her new husband and to her entire family! We look forward to hosting several other families who will be in Richmond for wedding events this fall!

Go See Julie and Julia!

As my friends and family know, I am a movie freak, and I particularly enjoy seeing a movie in an actual movie theatre once in a while. I love the communal experience of sitting in the dark with a movie audience as we all take the journey where ever the movie leads us. Much to my pleasure, I was able to take a break and escape to the movies on Sunday with our friend Donna. We went to Richmond's newest movie theatre, Movieland at Boulevard Square, and saw JULIE AND JULIA, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams--two of my very favorite actresses! In short, I LOVED the movie! It was so sweet and so full of joy. I was so touched not only to see the stories of two women who followed their hearts to do what brought them joy (most of the time!) but also to see how they were so validated and supported by their husbands. Stanley Tucci is stellar as Julia Child's husband, and I hope this role will bring him the wider acclaim he deserves. (In fact, I hope this movie is not forgotten at Oscar time. It deserves Oscars all the way around!)

I was also so gratified to see that the theatre was full! A sold out crowd on a Sunday afternoon to see a movie about Julia Child and a woman who wrote a blog about her challenge to cook all of the recipes in MASTERING THE ART OF FRENCH COOKING in one year. I think it's great that one of this summer's hit movies is about two women finding their joy while sharing their lives with their husbands who love and respect them--not a movie about blowing things up, or degrading someone, or the end of the world as we know it.

Go see this movie with your parents, your brother or sister, your spouse, your best friend. Share the joy!! Oh, and I must thank my own supportive spouse, Mac, who went down this B&B road with me without complaint or regret. As Julia and Julie would say, "He is the butter to my bread and the breath to my life!" Thank you, Mac, for the joy and respect and love you share with me every day! I love you!

Carytown Watermelon Festival

I cannot believe it is already August!! We are having our typical summer Richmond weather--extremely humid and hot with intermittent thunderstorms. I am grateful for the rain, however, which keeps our flowers in pots and beds at Maury Place watered. The hot August weather also reminds me that it is time for the 26th Annual Watermelon Festival! This year, the festival is on Saturday, August 9. Cary Street in Carytown will be blocked off and will be teeming with various food vendors, artists, and craftsmen. In addition, bands, jugglers, and folk acts will be entertaining from eight outdoor stages. It is definitely "the jubilant peak of summer in Richmond"! Last year, 112,000 people wandered through Carytown's summer festival. This year, 80 performances are scheduled and over 100 street vendors will be present! Carytown shops are decorating their windows with watermelon motifs. For more information, visit www.carytownrva.org. At Maury Place, we also offer a Carytown Merchants Discount Shopping Card good for the duration of your stay with us. The card is good for ten percent off purchases from participating Carytown merchants. Come stay with us at Maury Place and visit Carytown right down the street--Richmond's Mile of Style!!
