Virginia Historical Society's Rockabilly Exhibit is, well, rockin'

Virginia Rocks! The History of Rockabilly in the Commonwealth is now open at the Virginia Historical Society and its getting good reviews. Style Weekly gave it a +5 "zeitgeist" rating.

Virginia Rocks is the first exhibition to explore the state's place in rock 'n' roll history. "It is especially important that the exhibit is being displayed in Richmond because numerous rockabilly musicians hailed from here, and Richmond dance parties such as the Teen Age Party and Old Dominion Barn Dance helped boost the prominence of many rockabilly acts," says Roddy Moore, exhibition curator. The exhibit includes rare audio and video recordings, musical instruments, hundreds of photographs, stage costumes, a jukebox, and other memorabilia. The exhibit explores more than 60 artists and bands from all over the state who cut 45 rpm rockabilly records.

We say "Cool."

Insiders Guide to Richmond loves Maury Place!

When we picked up a copy of the 2010 "Insider's Guide to Richmond", we were delighted to read their comments about Maury Place at Monument. They love us! They say,

"It's clear that the owners have spared no expense, as the interior is over-the-top gorgeous, with high, ornately plastered ceilings, intricate woodwork, and lavishly appointed rooms. And then out back there's the 15-by-30-foot heated pool surrounded by plenty of comfortable seating.

"The suites upstairs range from the fabulous to the divine, including two with private balconies. The Pathfinder Suite, the largest, takes up the front of the house and has a sumptuous king bed, luxe seating and a table area, an elegant and refined bathroom, and the pièce de résistance--access to the balcony overlooking Monument Avenue. Wave regally to the commoners below; they don't know you don't own the place."

We are really happy about all of our recent press, including the great article in Remodel Magazine. Check out all of our press mentions on our Media Page.

As we are nearing the 150th anniversary commemorations in 2011 of The Civil War and the end of American Slavery, University of Richmond President Edward Ayers is on the schedule this coming Family Weekend for a timely talk, "Why Should We Care About the Civil War?" An historian of the American South, Ayers has written and edited ten books. Virginia War Memorial Remodeled

Shrine of Honor at the Virginia War Memorial
Did you know there are 11,634 names of Virginia heroes etched in the glass-and-stone walls in the Virginia War Memorial's Shrine of Honor?
After a decades-long effort to remodel the Memorial on Belvedere just north of the Lee Bridge, it is finally complete and a three-day inauguration is planned for September 17-19. The new Galanti Education Center, named for POW Paul Galanti and his wife, Phyllis, a prominent advocate for POW issues, will provide a facility for educational programs and related events. The Center includes an auditorium where a film, Into Battle, puts visitors in soldier-view frontline conditions from WWII to present day. Starting at 10 a.m. on September 17, retired Admiral Robert H. Shumaker will speak. According to his bio, Shumaker spent eight years in various Vietnam prisons and was known for devising all sorts of communications systems and never getting caught. He is credited with coining the phrase "the Hanoi Hilton" describing the Hoa Lo prison.

Other speakers, music, exhibitions, and family events are scheduled for the Inauguration, call 786-2060 or visit

Richmond Symphony Designer House Special

In an annual fundraising event for the Richmond Symphony, each year Richmond's best interior designers get together and do a "make-over" of a select Richmond area home. This year, Richmond's "Designer House" is in Richmond's elite Windsor Farms neighborhood, just a short drive from Maury Place at Monument. The event runs from September 13th to October 11th. Jeff and I took a "before" tour of this fantastic home, and we can't wait to see the finished product!

The renovation of the Designer house is divided up by rooms-- interior decorators "bid" for the opportunity to re-do one room, with the best being selected. We are particularly excited because Ellen Norris, the interior designer who helped us renovate Maury Place, will have her own room for the first time.

We are offering a lodging special for ticket holders of this year's event-- check out this and our other savings on our specials page. For more information and tickets visit the Designer House web page, and also check out pictures on their facebook page.
