A Great Weekend to Visit Hollywood Cemetery!

With Halloween upon us, this weekend would be a great weekend to visit Richmond's own Hollywood Cemetery. We have just added a new page to our website about the history of this important, unique Richmond landmark.  Hollywood Cemetery (named for its holly trees) is the final resting place of several United States Presidents, a Supreme Court Justice, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, and Maury Place's namesake, Matthew Fontaine Maury--among many other notable persons.  A stroll in the park like setting with magnificent views of downtown Richmond and the James River is not to be missed.

Jeff's 30th High School Reunion in Virginia Beach

This past weekend, Mac and I attended my 30th High School Reunion in Virginia Beach.  It is hard to believe that it has been thirty years!  Time has flown by since I graduated in the Class of 1980 at Kempsville High School.  Since then, I obtained my B.A. degree in English from Washington and Lee University, my law degree from the University of Virginia, practiced law in various capacities in Richmond, Virginia, and am now an innkeeper!  Mac was a great sport as we drove his Nissan 370-Z down memory lane in Virginia Beach.  We drove by the house where I grew up and all of the schools I attended.  In between, we walked on Virginia Beach's enhanced boardwalk and enjoyed staying in a friend's condo near the ocean.  It was great to see old friends again and reflect on how far we have come in thirty years!

Fall Colors at Maury Place

Fall foliage is at its peak in Richmond and at Maury Place.  The maple tree in front of Maury Place, in view of our front porch and the balcony of our Pathfinder Suite, is at its height of color!  On October 31, we will celebrate our two-year anniversary of being open for business.  Fall is beautiful here in Richmond and across the State of Virginia.  Now is a perfect time to see our fall colors.

12 Hours in D.C.!

Mac and I decided to escape to Washington, D.C. for a day for a quick getaway.  We made it to Washington in exactly two hours.

Yesterday was the Day of JeffWe went to see an exhibit that I have wanted to see for some time at the National Portrait Gallery:  "Telling Stories:  Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg."  The collection appeals to both my love of movies and the nostalgic Americana of Norman Rockwell's paintings.  It was a great exhibit, and we also enjoyed the short film with Spielberg and Lucas in which they discuss the works on display.  The exhibit will be on display through January 2.  Last night, we had dinner with Ann, a law school friend, at Poste, a French Brasserie directly across the street from the Portrait Gallery.

After indulging in a leisurely morning, today was the Day of MacWe had a breakfast of French Toast and Waffles and worked our way over to the National Mall.  From there, we went to the Air and Space Museum to see "Beyond:  Visions of Our Solar System."  Did I ever mention that "Star Wars" is Mac's favorite movie?  This exhibit features 148 rarely seen photos of moons, planets, and solar systems taken by various space crafts that we have launched into the heavens over the years.  The detail of the photos was truly amazing!  It also brought home that our little planet Earth is truly a speck in the greater cosmos!  That exhibit will be on display through May 2.

Reel Pride Richmond: November 5-6, 2010

Maury Place at Monument is proud to be a sponsor of The Second Annual Reel Pride Richmond Film Festival. This year's festival occurs November 5-6 and will feature a selection of outstanding films that celebrate the lives and loves of LGBT individuals--and indeed all those who value a fair and compassionate community! As Virginia's leading LGBT Film Festival, attendees will have the unique opportunity to view documentaries, dramas, and comedies reflecting the best and most compelling LGBT films and meet producers, directors, and actors involved. After the overwhelming response to last year's festival, Reel Pride Richmond has this year moved to Richmond Center Stage, our City's beautiful new Performing Arts Center. The Festival will be held in the Gottwald Playhouse with a Friday night cocktail reception and an after party in adjoining reception spaces. The Gala Opening Night will feature the premiere of Howl. Howl stars James Franco as Allen Ginsberg and was directed by the Academy Award winning directors of The Life and Times of Harvey Milk and The Celluloid Closet. The film also stars David Strathairn, Jon Hamm, Mary-Louise Parker, and Jeff Daniels. All proceeds raised from the Film Festival will benefit ROSMY, Richmond's Organization for Sexual Minority Youth. Mac and I support ROSMY and its mission to enhance the overall well being of sexual minority youth through support, education, advocacy, and opportunities. ROSMY is perhaps needed now more than ever! For further information about the Film Festival, visit the Reel Pride website. To learn more about ROSMY, visit www.rosmy.org.
