24 Hours in Savannah!

After enjoying one night in a small inn off of King Street in Charleston, South Carolina, we have stopped in Savannah for 2 nights on our way home from the Professional Association of Innkeepers International Conference. The conference was excellent, and (as always) we are returning home to Maury Place with lots of good ideas to improve the Maury Place experience for our guests.

We are now staying at a historic property overlooking Lafayette Square in Savannah. Today, we enjoyed a historic trolley tour of old Savannah and lingering among the shops on the Savannah River and in other areas. We especially enjoyed the unexpected delights in the SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design!) shop. Very eclectic and funky! It has been fun to stay at other small historic properties in historic cities that are similar to Richmond. Tomorrow, we are stopping briefly in Charlotte, North Carolina, to visit family and friends there before we head back to Richmond.

"This Beautiful City" Opens January 12 at Triangle Players

"This Beautiful City" opens at our neighboring theatre, Richmond Triangle Players, on January 12 and runs through February 5, 2011.  While the theater group The Civilians was conducting interviews with people in Colorado Springs involved or affected by the growth of the mega-church movement and the battle over gay marriage, the Ted Haggard scandal broke.  The ensuing events surrounding the New Life Church pastor shook the entire city and provided the play's creators with an unprecedented opportunity to capture those events as they unfolded.

"This Beautiful City" is a fascinating and timely look at faith and how it affects the American landscape.   Tickets are $20 for Thursday evenings and Sunday matinees; $25 for Friday and Saturday evenings.  Tickets may be purchased online at  Maury Place is just a short walk away from the Triangle Players Theatre.

We are proud supporters of  both Richmond Triangle Players and the upcoming Acts of Faith Festival.

An Unexpected Christmas Gift!

This is a picture of a special Christmas gift from our friend Beth. This beautiful pewter figurine of the Matthew Fontaine Maury statue was sculpted and cast by R. Daniel Booton to commemorate the Centennial of Monument Avenue.  It is number 50 of the limited edition of 1000 numbered pieces.

Dan Booton attended VMI and the University of Delaware.  He became a pewtersmith in 1975 and operated a custom casting house specializing in one of a kind limited edition sculptural pieces.  It is an amazingly detailed likeness of the Maury Monument, which is directly across the street from Maury Place at the intersection of Monument Avenue, Franklin Street, and Belmont Avenue.  Displayed behind the sculpture is a historic picture of the 1929 dedication of the Maury Monument.
