Visit Richmond This Spring!

Richmond is a treat city to visit this spring, and its many great attractions are just a short walk or drive from luxury bed and breakfast Maury Place at Monument.

Just a half mile from the inn is the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, featuring "Pop Art and Beyond:Tom Wesselmann" (April 4- July 28). VMFA, a top ten museum, is a sublime delight featuring 5000 years of art, an enticing shop and Amuse, an award-winning restaurant.  Maury Place on Monument guests can enjoy a stroll down historic Monument Avenue, or can go shopping at Carytown, Richmond's mile-long shopping and dining district.

Richmond is a town with a creative vibe which translates to live music, theater, dance and great foodie restaurants. It's the city where Patrick Henry said "Give me liberty or give me death." As the capital of the Confederacy, the city was burned as the union troops advanced, and is the Capital of Virgina. The neoclassical capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson, is the location where much of Spielberg's "Lincoln" was filmed.

Outdoors Magazine voted Richmond the Best Outdoors Town in 2013.  The majestic James River brought John Smith in 1607, and today is a haven to wildlife, featuring class 4 rapids through the heart of the city, offering kayaks, rafts and tubes unforgettable rides. Walk or bike along the flood wall, or cross a suspended pedestrian bridge to an island for an oasis of wilderness.

Reserve your Spring getaway now, at Maury Place at Monument!

Two Classic Musicals Coming to Downtown Richmond

Richmond is blessed with quality theater productions year-round. We are the home of several local professional theaters, and Richmond's Landmark Theater brings top Broadway entertainment to the River City. Opening on March 26 and running through Holy Week with a final performance on Easter Sunday, March 31, is the musical spectacle Les Miserables. Director Cameron Mackintosh presents a brand new 25th Anniversary staging of this legendary musical with its glorious music and dazzling re-imagined scenery. This new production has been acclaimed by critics, fans, and new audiences and is breaking box office records where ever it goes. For further information, see www.Landmarktheater.net.

A couple of weeks later, Meredith Wilson's classic musical The Music Man will open at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre and will run from April 12 through May 19. This award-winning, critically acclaimed Broadway classic is an all-American institution. With its quirky characters, charming situations and one-of-a-kind nostalgic score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets, and sentimental ballads, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best! For further information, see www.Va-rep.org.

Both of these theaters are within a short drive of Maury Place at Monument.

BBAV Gathering in Richmond this Week

Earlier this week, Mac and I attended the annual conference of the Bed and Breakfast Association of Virginia (or BBAV), which occurred in Richmond this year. We always enjoy meeting up with fellow innkeepers in our state and learning some new tips about innkeeping.

One keynote speaker this year was Jay Karen, who is CEO of the Professional Association of Innkeepers (or PAII). We are also members of that organization, which is another great organization for our profession. PAII has launched a "Better Way to Stay" campaign that features some funny videos promoting the small lodging industry.

Here is a sample of the "Better Way to Stay" campaign.
