"Posing Beauty in African American Culture" at VMFA
"Posing Beauty in African American Culture" is the latest exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts that will run through July 27. Images from the 1890's to the present examine how the concept of African American beauty has been represented in historical and contemporary contexts through a diverse range of media including photography, film, and video. This exhibition explores contemporary understandings of beauty by framing the notion of aesthetics, race, class, and gender within art, popular culture and politics. The VMFA is just steps away within walking distance of Maury Place.
